Retirement Services

Comprehensive Care

Your retired horse’s health is our priority. Our comprehensive care includes:

  • Preventative care, such as low-starch, low-sugar diets, and regular exercise

  • Vaccinations, deworming, and teeth floating

  • Supplements and medications as needed

  • Emergency care when required

We partner with Dr. Kris Purcell of Carson Valley Equine for veterinary services. Owners are required to establish an account with Carson Valley Equine, which bills directly for vaccinations, teeth floating, and other veterinary care.

For farrier services, we work with Foothills Farrier, who also bills owners directly for trimming and shoeing.

Nearby Veterinary Facilities:

  • Comstock Equine Hospital: 7 miles (10 minutes)

  • UC Davis Equine Hospital: 150 miles (2.5 hours)

With advancements in veterinary medicine, horses are living longer, healthier lives. However, the associated costs can be significant. We highly recommend maintaining medical insurance for your horse until they age out at 18–20 years old.

Custom Diets

We understand that dietary needs are unique, especially for horses with conditions like Cushings, Insulin Resistance, Laminitis, or EPSM. Our team works closely with veterinarians and owners to create customized diets based on each horse’s history and requirements. For horses with dietary restrictions, we carefully manage pasture turnout and can provide grazing muzzles if needed.

Emergency Care

Our staff lives on-site, providing 24/7 care. Pasture horses are checked twice daily, with additional checks throughout the day.

When signing our boarding contract, owners authorize Franktown Meadows to arrange emergency veterinary care if they cannot be reached. We encourage owners to provide an emergency contact and discuss their preferences for their horse’s care to guide us in case of an emergency.

Post-Op / Rehab Care

For horses requiring stall rest or rehabilitation, we offer:

  • 12’ x 16’ box stalls

  • Restricted turnout in 30’ x 30’ dirt or grass paddocks

Fees for these services are determined on an individual basis.
